Patriots aim higher in world tournaments
The DLSU-D Patriots continue to expand their global presence after recently competing at the 2025 Federation of International Sports Universities (FISU) World University Games—also known as the 32nd Summer Universiade—held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany. This appearance solidifies the University’s continued pursuit to secure spots in elite global tournaments.
The Sports Development Office (SDO) previously emphasized its plans to seal the Patriots’ consistent presence in international leagues, including 2021 FISU Games in Chengdu, China, where they represented both the University and the Philippines. This year, badminton standouts Thomas Neo Gatdula and Ma. Althea Ladiana were selected to compete, marking another milestone for the team’s world tourney campaign.
Despite having only six weeks to prepare, the shuttlers confidently showcased their prowess among 39 countries, alongside powerhouses such as the Netherlands, Bhutan, and India. Competing in both men’s and women’s singles events, they finished 33rd overall.
“[FISU] is considered as the second biggest sporting event in the world, next to the Olympics,” said SDO Director Gerardo “Gerry” Sergio III in an interview with The HERALDO FILIPINO. “With our status as an active member of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP)一the recognized sports federation in the country by the FISU and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Sports Federation一I am very positive that our athletes will always be given an opportunity to play on the international stage.”
Sergio noted that the tournament featured multiple high-ranked players and Olympians across various sports, creating a highly competitive environment. In response, the University’s sports program strives to focus on enhancing training schemes, emphasizing coach mentorship to develop more effective programs for student-athletes.
As they continue to prepare for upcoming international exposure, the SDO aims to secure slots for two major international events: the 22nd ASEAN University Games in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, Malaysia (December 1–12, 2026), and the 33rd Summer Universiade in ChungCheong, South Korea (August 1–12, 2027).
