For The Love Of The Game

The sun’s heat in outdoor tournaments intensifies players’ drive. Motivation and pressure weigh heavily as they pursue their goals. Swimming demands focus in the quiet of an Olympic-size pool, while cheers fuel every moment of a basketball league. Out on the field, athletes display skill and speed with fierce aggression, signature moves, and pride in representing their institutions.

These scenes reveal that success in sports demands commitment and passion. But the question lingers: when does competitive drive empower an athlete—and when does it start consuming them?

What it takes to become better

Every stroke in the pool tests endurance; every lap demands precision. For swimmers, the grind is relentless, leaving little room for anything else. Time is tightly scheduled, often pushing other responsibilities aside.

Alarie Somuelo, a DLSU-D student-athlete from BIT34, shared, “I train every day just for a competition but since swimming is a very hard sport, ‘di pwedeng mag-slack off, kasi once na mag-slack off, mahirap i-catch up lahat ng strength.”

Her training has cultivated discipline not just in the water but also in her academics.

Somuelo also shared her techniques, Usually, pinaplano ko poyung schedule ahead—kunwari if I need to pass assessments early para if may training ako ng hapon, I can train. Then, may mga days din when I feel overwhelmed and very tired and I just keep on reminding myself na pareho importante yung sports and academics.”

In the pursuit of championships, time sharpens focus—on and off the field. Somuelo’s journey as a CICS student shows two commitments: the drive to swim faster and the discipline to keep her responsibilities afloat.

No pain, no gain

According to PubMed Central, most athletes lean toward perfectionism—chasing flawless performance. A National Institute of Health (NIH) study notes that these high standards often form from childhood experiences, personal ambition, or family expectations. This mindset appears across all sports, where the most dangerous error an athlete can make is mistaking unhealthy obsession for motivation.

An anonymous basketball player shared how to recognize when the drive becomes harmful, stating, “When the game stops feeling fun, you start getting frustrated over every small mistake, and you think about basketball even when you’re supposed to rest.”

Resetting the court’s game

Basketball demands intense stamina, which for some athletes leads to fatigue, decreased shooting accuracy, and neglect of proper nutrition. Pressure can come from within the court or from expectations placed on players’ shoulders. The urge to deliver a polished dribble or perfect shot can shift into an unhealthy push beyond what the body can sustain. When breaks are ignored, focus falters.

Basketball player Rain Angelo Marcial learned the value of listening to his body the hard way. He shared, “When I feel physically or mentally drained from training, I just take a rest and mamaya ko na itutuloy yung ginagawa ko once na fully recovered na o sa tingin [ko] kung kaya ko na mag-perform sa training.”

For Marcial, balance demands courage—choosing what he can handle in the moment. “When I feel tired and ‘yung mindset ko is magulo, I just take a full day’s rest. Kasi once na nakapag-rest ako, maibabalik ko yung mindset and mentality ko sa paglalaro ng basketball. I maintain discipline pa rin saking sarili kahit pagod ako sa training.”

Extreme exertion is common across sports, but passion and joy sustain long-term commitment. Overplaying leads to burnout, which affects performance. Yet amid breaks, skills and tactics resurface. Marcial’s run on the court goes beyond competitions—the joy in his passion keeps his commitment to mastering the game. To pause is not quitting; a timeout is a defense against burnout.

Behind every stroke and sprint, competitive sports reflect discipline, resilience, and growth. But athletes can lose themselves in the pressure, chasing results at the expense of balance. When the line between passion and obsession blurs, it takes restraint, awareness, and courage to regain control.

Whether in the pool or on the court, success belongs not only to those who reach the finish line, but to those who understand the process as a whole. For in every wave and relentless stride lies a champion who knows when to take a break—and return with a fire that fuels rather than consumes.
